subcommittee chairman Ron Makela explained, “Our intent is to have policies that work equally in both directions, working well for both the employees and the administration.”
Makela also discussed aspects of other state-required policies including one pertaining to sexual harassment „ in the workplace and changes in the juvenile court system that modified records access. The board voted to table these topics until the next meeting. Board member Bryant Lee encouraged input from the public, school administrators, and teachers.

County assistant school superintendent Mary Ann Biggs summarized state standards of learning test results. Only individual student scores were received, without composites or comparative data for the state or county. “No cut off (for passing) has been established at this time,” noted Biggs. The county’s goal this year is to align the course material with what will be tested by the SOLs. “The state is evaluating the instrument itself and will establish a (passing level) in October.”
