The board directed Gangel to prepare new draft salary schedules, aiming towards a performance-based plan in lieu of a years-of-service plan. Current salary schedules do not have equal, graduated steps which makes them insufficient for a performance-based model. Gangel estimated that it would cost more than $110,000 a year in additional salary money and two years of conversion time to establish a workable symmetrical pay schedule for teachers and administrative personnel. Mike Tupper and Richard Smith distributed the final drafts of the updated student handbooks for the high school and elementary school, respectively. The books now reflect new emergency plans, changes in the state code concerning student conduct and other important information.
School board members asked that their personal telephone numbers be included so that parents and other members of the public can contact them.
Field trip planned
In mid-September, high school teacher Beth Gall’s environmental science class will study beach, dune and marsh ecology at Smith Island Study Center in the Chesapeake Bay under a fullypaid grant. The county will provide a school bus for the three-day event.
