Promotion projects

According to Tompkins, the new town webpage “is getting favorable response,” with more than 2,000 people accessing the main page. Fourteen have requested brochures and other information.

Former council member Ray Gooch continues as chairman of the town bulletin board committee. Since the last meeting, Gooch toured the town searching for a suitable location for the board. He recommended the town square in the middle of Main Street, near the post office, Trinity Church, and the Country Cafe, as the most appropriate. Gooch envisions the board to be used to advertise local events for the community as well as to provide tourist information. He asked three contractors to submit bids and requested other names be suggested for him to contact.

Public hearing

The council convened a public hearing on three applications — a boundary adjustment submitted by C.E. Giles, and two special use permits. Giles’ application involved two separate but related actions. In the first, he requested that the rear line of his Gay Street lot be modified to accommodate a shed built across the rear property line. Giles also owns the second parcel involved in the transaction. In the second part of the application, Giles wanted to incorporate a portion of the rear lot to his neighbor Erma Jenkins to accommodate a shed crossing their adjacent property lines. The Tbwn Planning Commission previously approved the request. The council voted unanimously to table the request pending town attorney Frank Reynold’s researching the issues.

Trinity Episcopal Church applied for a special use permit to allow the church to convert a retail building to pastoral space under the standards for a house of worship. The request was approved unanimously.
