Makela epitomizes the word volunteer. Aside from her job as volunteer coordinator for the Rappahannock School System, she continually commits to additional volunteer activities in the schools — far beyond what is required of her.
Always there when someone needs a hand, she works with Headwaters programs and 4-H. “I’ve discovered we’re one huge network here and feed information to each other,” she said.
“My father told me something I’ve never forgotten. He said “You have to go through life thinking you’re going to make this world a better place. That’s what I expect of you.’ It’s why I get involved.”
