shows are DeLoss McGraw of Arizona and Kiki Felix of Washington, D.C. Ballard has original prints by American Impressionist Mary Cassatt and well-known modernists Wayne Thiebaud, Jim Dine and Red Grooms.
One of the main parts of his business consists of selling antique, semi-antique and new Persian, Caucasian, Turkish and Afgani rugs. Each of his 150 rugs, stacked, rolled and folded in piles, has a price tag with some more expensive than others, but all gorgeous.
He travels frequently to New York, London and Paris for rugs and art, and exhibited his rugs at the First International Rug Fair in London this summer.
Ballard, in his 50s, has worked as a museum curator, director and art dealer for 31 years, he said. He graduated with an MFA in fine art from the California College of Arts and Crafts and worked there as an exhibition curator after he graduated. From California he trekked to New Zealand where he worked as director of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, followed by 15 years of working as a director in different San Francisco galleries.
More recently, Ballard worked as curator in at the Sunrise Museum. in Charleston, W.Va. and director at the Rockville Arts Place in Maryland.
He and his wife, Joan, are newlyweds, and live parttime in the county. Joan is the daughter of Rosie Day of Flint Hill.
The shop is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
