focused, soft forms and edges evolve toward the crisp and precise curling peel. The curling of this peel has been painted with straight lines rather than exuberant curves. A visual experience of the tangerine gracefully peeling by itself has been created. It is also the play of the soft light that gives this poetic effect.
The largest composition, “Still Life With Bowl,” was a challenge rightfully taken on. However, the kind of touching we see in the smaller works is absent. The awareness of the whole composition, at all times, through the touch of the brush is lost. Each piece of fruit, vegetable or bowl is seen as too separate and the space between the objects is not felt by this viewer. It does not feel as if the composition emerged in the process of finding these forms in space. It is not an easy task, but well worth the artistic effort, to work on a larger canvas of set dimension. The more complex composition is the perfect tool to develop Bussells’ already gained strengths and sensitivities.
Bussells is a fine painter with an awareness of the beauty hidden in the commonplace. His paintings are on view at Middle Street Gallery until Nov. 29.
