Visiting R.H. Ballard Fine Art, Limited at 371 Main Street in Washington, Va. is something like taking a survey course ih modern art. The original prints displayed on the walls are by ToulouseLautrec, Cezannes and Renoirs that one usually sees only at museums with uniformed guards at the door.
Ballard located his shop within rooms at Rare Finds and is in an excellent spot with The Inn only a short distance away. He said he has done well since he moved on Sept. 1 from a second floor gallery on Gay Street.
French Impressionists are just part of his impressive collection. French modernist originals by Picasso, Miro, Matisse and Chagall line the walls. Most of the prints and paintings are lesser-known works, but are remarkable in that they show the scope of the artists’ talents.
Just when I had managed to stop gushing praises of his collection, he pulled out an exquisitely detailed woodcut [ by Durer that was close to 500 years old.
He obviously enjoys his career, and over the years he has been accumulating art works. He has amassed an extensive collection that represents a variety of wellknown artists.
However, the hardest part of the business is cash flow, he said. At least, he isn’t worried about the volatile stock market with his money invested in art and with his prices, and it doesn’t take many sales to make a good month.
Ballard himself is also an excellent painter, and he’s not reluctant to display his own work next to works by much more renowned artists.
