40 different species and one gets a disease then the whole ecosystem doesn’t suffer so much.”
All the data gathered now and then will be compiled and put on a data base which will be accessible from the Internet. “When we get done putting in our data, we’ll get a computer print out and will put the data on the Internet. That will probably be in six to nine months,” he said.
The project will carry on from year to year and Rissler hopes to get adult volunteers interested in the project as well. In order to compile data for the entire hectare he’ll need more people to help than he has students. Once the whole hectare is mapped a study of individual types of trees and other things like the ph of the soil, shrub study, etc. can be done.
“There’s no end to the things you can keep studying,” Rissler said. “And you can start asking questions like Why are the pine trees back along one section and not in others?’ or Why do some sections have only three or four trees and others have 20?’ Those types of questions require the students to think about the process, how the area got to be the way it is and what effect man has had on it.”
