On a gentle day in April many years ago, I stood under an apple tree billowing with blooms and watched a Cedar Waxwing cling to the end of a flower covered twig and systematically bat the pink petals, one by one. A broadened view revealed a whole flock of waxwings, each eating silently at the end of a branch. It was the beautiful consuming the exquisite. That long ago memory from central North- Carolina came back to me as I watched a flock of perhaps 25 waxwings settle into thtf scraggly privet shrub in our ttiack yard. The quietly elegant birds picked off and ate 'the blue-black berries and, as if with one constant, flew away.

What odd tricks memory plays as it brings the past to illuminate the present. Every aspect of that experience of my youth came back to me: the tender new-green of the leaves on the tree, the gentle warmth of the April day, and a Robin’s rollicking song being hurled into the air from the top of the apple tree.
