E.E.O.C. said they were bound by confidentially and would not even acknowledge to the Rappahannock News that there was a case.
Accounts of the meeting vary slightly between Luke and Reid, but they agreed that the E.E.O.C. told Luke and McCarthy to hire Reid as animal warden, which Luke said would mean firing the present animal warden, Carl Menefee. Luke said the county “flat out” refused to fire him because he was doing a good job. The EEOC also asked the county to pay Reid one year’s salary, which amounted to $22,000.
When the county refused to give her the job and complained that she had been employed meanwhile for a year in another job, the E.E.O.C. requested two year’s salary minus Reid’s present annual salary. They also requested compensation for medical insurance, retirement, a $345 medical bill, $175 in legal fees and mileage to and from her job for a year that amounted to over $8,000.
