Gannon Spacial to the Rappahannock News An over-abundance of donated.' books and a shortage of volunteers to manage the annual book sale have prompted a proposal for a book-sales site at the Rappahannock County Library that would permit year-round sales of used books. County administrator John McCarthy briefed the Board of Supervisors on the proposal at its monthly meeting Monday night. The Library Board and the Friends of the Library are exploring the possibility of building a “book bam” on the library grounds to house donated books and serve as a sales outlet for the books. The plan - holds promise of greater income for the library from book sales, and a solution to a growing problem of where to store the books and how to sell them. “Our storage space is no longer adequate for the volume of donated books that we have been getting,” said David Shaffer, library director, in an interview. “We have enough books to do more than a once-a-year sale." The storage problem is evident in the basement of the library, which is crammed with donated books stacked on shelves and piled in boxes on the floor. “The conditions there are not conducive to book storage,” Shaffer said, noting that books don’t store well in a humid basement environment.
