William Atkins Ward died at his Washington home surrounded by loved ones and family on Monday, Jan. 5 at the age of 56 following a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Virginia Reid Ward, his daughters, Amy and Meagan, his son, Griffin, his mother, Marie Royle and his brother Daniel. He is predeceased by his father, Daniel, and his brother, Robert.
Mr. Ward was bom on April 9, 1947 in Paterson, N.J., and lived in Glen Rock, N. J. where he attended high school. He continued his education at Trinidad College in Colorado where he achieved a degree in gunsmithing.
He began his career in New York City with Griffin & Howe which he later purchased and ran until his retirement in 1991. He then moved to Washington, Virginia where he has lived for the past nine years pursuing his life-long dream of living in the country, building his own home and eryoying the outdoors.
Mr. Ward enjoyed living in Rappahannock County where he served on the Board of Assessors and most recently the Board of Zoning Appeals.
A memorial service will be held at the family home in Washington on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m.
