Passage of a lighting ordinance for Rappahannock County was delayed Monday for a field test of "foot candle power,” but there appeared to be sufficient votes on the Board of Supervisors to pass this historic and hard fought legislation.
Chairman Charles K. “Pete” Estes ended a sometimes tense hour and a half public meeting by instructing County Administrator John McCarthy to arrange for the members of the board to view lights at night to acquaint themselves with the brightness of “foot candle power,” the measure used to set lighting power in the county’s proposed ordinance.
The field viewing will take place on Aug. 18 after darkness falls at about 9 p.m.
Passage of the lighting ordinance will end a debate that began five years ago, leaving one version of the law languishing for months at the Board of Supervisors and resulting in growing acrimony among some county residents.
