Meanwhile, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors voted $1,500 for the outof-pocket expenses for these seven Rappahannock County players to travel to Florida to compete in the tournament.
Winning the state championship guaranteed the team a spot in this weekend’s Florida tournament, where it will face off against the top teams from West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
The girls’will start off the tournament with games against West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina in the ‘A bracket. The remaining teams will play in the ‘B’ bracket. The top two teams from each bracket will compete in a single elimination contest the following day for the regional title. The next step is the softball World Series in Washington state.
“If the team wins in Florida, they deserve every bit of it,” said Mills. “Not just the girls, but their parents too.” Parents of all 14 girls attended the state finals in Bristol last month, something Mills says helps make this team what it is today. “All of these parents are extremely supportive,” he added.
Six of the seven girls from Rappahannock will most likely be in the starting line-up in Florida. “These girls aren’t just good, they’re outstanding,” boasted Mills. Many of his players can perform in more than one position, making it easier for him to give all the girls time on the field during a game.
“If I were the head coach at Rappahannock High School, I’d be so pleased to see players like these on the way up,” he said. With their “whatever it takes” attitude, Mills has no doubt that all of his team members are winners.
“I’d like to say thank you to Paul Gall and Carl Payne for helping get the Rappahannock league started over 15 years ago,” said Mills. “I’m glad these girls have had a chance to play the game.”
The team leaves for Florida on Friday, and will play their games throughout the following week for the chance to head to Washington state for the World Series games later this month.
