In addition to his wife and daughter, Kahn also left behind two illegitimate children, both by different women with whom he had had long term relationships. One of these children, Kahn’s only son Nathaniel, 11 when his father died, sets out on a worldwide journey to discover who this legendary man really was and to try to understand his monumental work and the choices he made.

Early in the film Nathaniel is seen rollerblading in the great courtyard of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif. Completed in 1965, the institute is a masterwork of 20th-century architecture and a magnificent Kahn creation.
