The base of the compost pile should consist of a mix of coarse yard and garden scraps. This can include small twigs, com stalks, leaves and straw. This layer should help the pile’s water drainage and air flow. Next, you can start alternating layers of kitchen scraps and garden waste, a nitrogen- rich layer ( fresh grass clippings or hay) and a one-inch layer of soil. It is important to add a layer of soil because it contains the microorganisms which are needed to complete the process. Continue alternating layers until the box becomes full or you run out of material.
Maintaining the pile
The pile needs to stay moist and may require occasional watering to keep the compost moist, but not soggy. Every three to five weeks the pile needs to be turned. With a pitchfork or similar tool, move the outside material to the inside and the inside material to the outside. This helps with air flow and keeps the pile evenly moist. Clean
