The northern mockingbird and gray catbird have long, complex songs of warbles, squeaks, guttural notes and melodious phrases that sometimes go on for as long as 10 to 15 minutes. The males of these species do most of the singing, but some females can sing vigorously and occasionally counter-sing with the males. This singing appears to be most important during their pair bonding and/or territorial defense, but usually these birds sing throughout the year.
