Says Gisela, “I was so romantic, and we got in a line at the justice of the peace’s office, and when we got to the front, tears in my eyes, the man said; ‘That will be two dollars. Next in line!’ And like that, we were married.”

She followed her new husband, who was hired by CBS, to Vietnam and around the world over the next 30 years.

When he went back to his “Uncle’s” farm, the house was just as he had remembered it, and music was playing on a radio but no one was there. “It was eerie,” he says. “As if nothing had changed. I have no one here anymore,” he says almost sadly, but his memories of a place and a time when he was young. . . .
