up for President George W. Bush. But I fail to see how Kerry can get there, for where he now stands with his even more liberal voting record than Sen. Edward Kennedy in the U.S. Senate.
And nobody, despite the absence of the hot-button issues from the Democratic convention stage, could win the party nomination without being on the liberal side of the social issues. And the fact is that conservative Republicans have taken over the Virginia General Assembly largely on the back of their hard line on social issues coupled with a strong anti-tax message.
Those who contend the presence of North Carolinian John Edwards on the ticket will boost Kerry’s chances in Virginia ignore the fact that Edwards chose not to seek reelection in his own state because he did not think he could win again.
I have said that Edwards will be an asset in reaching out to independent voters in those states that will be in play for both parties, but I doubt if he will help much in the southern states.
Still it has to be said that at the moment the Bush campaign seems pretty moribund in Virginia. While the Kerry forces are giving out bumper stickers to those who want them, Bush supporters who want bumper stickers are complaining that they cannot get them without paying for them on the internet.
