The festival not only impacted the community, but also its participants. According to Doug Beck, executive director of the Chateauville Foundation, the Castleton Festival’s location inspired its performers in ways most can’t.
“There are certainly festivals in rural locations, but in our situation there was a harmonious mingling of festival, landscape and community,” said Beck. “It’s a special atmosphere that’s conducive to focused work that you don’t find anywhere else.”
In comparison to other festivals, including Tanglewood in Massachusetts and Glimmerglass in N.Y., the Castleton Festival is held in quite a remote location, one that most opera fans would have to “make a pilgrimage to,” said music critic Donald Sossin.
The isolation of Castleton seemed to work in its favor in many ways, especially keeping its patrons out of trouble.
