141 many ways, we who are privileged to live in Rappahannock County experience a very high quality of life.
We all glory in the wonders of our beautiful natural and man-made landscapes. Despite being geographically separated from each other in our rural environment, we have rich networks of community activity - commercial, charitable, and social.
An unusually large number of our citizens are recognized for their creative and talented work, in every medium and venue from agriculture to animal husbandry, to architecture to carpentry, culinary arts to dance to ecology and education to finance, to herbology and gardening, graphic arts, information technol%ies. to landscaping, to literature, mapping, mechanics, music, painting, photography, plumbing, pottery, spirituality, woodworking.
Our citizens contribute an amazing amount of time and talent to a wide array of charitable works, from mentoring, to feeding the hungry, to rescuing animals, to conserving land for the future.
Yet, our precious community is highly vulnerable. We are vulnerable because we are totally dependent on automobiles and other gasoline-run vehicles for everyday existence. We are vulnerable because the vast majority of our money is spent outside of our local community, draining valuable resources away like a sieve. We are vulnerable because there are so few local opportunities for paving work. The vast majority of products that residents of the county purchase, are purchased from sellers outside this community, and these products come from sources all over the world. Our information and news comes from global and national sources—only our weekly newspaper and an online bulletin board provide opportunities to inform, learn and teach about ourselves to each other.
