According to its Web site, martinsfoods.com, Giant Foods purchased the Martin’s chain in Hagerstown, Md., in 1970. David Javitch started what became Giant Foods in 1923 as a small meat market in Carlisle, offering, in Javitch’s words, “the best products at the fairest price.” In 1936 Javitch purchased the Giant Foods Shopping Center in Lewistown, Pa. The store offered perishables and dry goods under one roof, a novel concept at the time.
“The Culpeper store will have a butcher shop, a pharmacy, a gas station with extra rewards and some nice promotions, Market Square deli, a seafood market, a bakery and a florist,” Brand said. “There will also be a very deep assortment of natural and organic products and I know that will be exciting for many shoppers.
