July was a good month at the Rappahannock Food Pantry, according to Kathy Eggers, volunteer coordinator for Plant a Row for the Hungry.
Vegetable and fruit donations totaled 1,755 pounds in July compared to June’s 650.
“Rappahannock is the envy of neighboring counties for the amount, variety and quality of the produce offered at the pantry," said Eggers. “And virtually nothing goes to waste."
If pantry director Mimi Forbes feels that she has more than pantry clients can use, she’ll share the fresh food wealth with food banks at Page and Fauquier counties, Her first concern, though, is always Rappahannock folks.
More than twice as much canned and packaged food was donated in July than in June. However, pet food donations were down.
Some 123 households were enrolled in the pantry as of July 31. Eleven households signed up last week, many because of the July 23 article in the Rappahannock News .encouraging those who need a little help to use the pantry.
This month the pantry is collecting school supplies. Volunteers are looking for glue sticks, pencils, black and blue pens, black and white composition notebooks, one-subject spiral notebooks, loose leaf paper, crayons, crayola-type markers, hand sanitizers, and Kleenex.
David Shaffer, Rappahannock County Librarydirector, has been replenishing the children's books available at the pantry. He also is putting together a box of large print books for older pantry clients
Among churches, Methodists are off to an earlylead in food contributions. Sperryville, Flint Hill, and Willis Chapel United Methodist churches have each contributed canned and boxed goods.
