Landscaper’s ‘dancing
tree’ brings big smiles

As a well-known landscape and garden designer for many years, Flint Hill resident Candace Clough knows all about trees. But it was only after making her own tree as a gift for a special friend this summer that she learned all about branches — specifically, just how many unexpected and interconnected branches a sturdy tree* can support.
Clough’s tree is actually a many-hued, undulating and wildly intricate two- by three-foot mixedmedia mosaic. It depicts a mythical arbor she calls Sidonea Menageria — a playful twist on botanical Latin coined by Clough in honor of its recipient, 10-year-old Sidney Dodson, a Front Royal honor student who is confined to a wheelchair by cerebral palsy but who, as Clough puts it, “is a unique and beautiful child who inspires everybody who meets her.” Sidney and her parents lived in Flint Hill till last summer
