The county a few years ago established the Farmland Preservation Program IFPP) to provide a cash incentive to farmers in exchange for their development rights. The farmland is placed in a conversation easement. Farmers are free to continue farming, sell their property, or pass it on to their heirs, according to RCCA. The easement only prohibits future development and the land must remain open, per the easement.
The program was an initiative by RCCA which annually holds a fundraiser called Rappahannock Evening View." Proceeds benefit the program.
