tJa p The town was originally called Happy Creek Gap. from the name of the stream that rises here and flows through Front Royal. The name was changed to Chester's Gap in the 1700s. after Capt. John Chester who bought a tract of land on the west side of what is now Warren County. The town was referred to as Chester Gap in the journals of soldiers who had to march over the mountain during the Civil War. There were two settlements there, one called Williamsburg, for the number of families who lived here with the name Williams, and the other called Chester Gap. When a new post office opened in 1954, the town chose to decide on one name. They chose Chester Gap.
