In 1763, Lord Fairfax granted land in this area to Joseph Amiss and Joseph Bayse. The early settlers were mostly English and French Huguenots.
In 1810, when an application was made for a post office for the community, there was much discussion and debate as to the name of the town, Amissville or Bayse. An election was held for land owners within a three mile radius. Amissville won out over Bayse by one vote.
