at Culpeper Regional, it was this past July that Allen performed his first hip replacement with computer assistance using DePuy Hip Navigation Software thanks to Culpeper Regional Hospital. Culpeper Regional is among only a handful of hospitals in Virginia that have the technology to perform this operation using computer assistance.
“When you are replacing a hip, the measurements are critical,” said Allen, “so that one leg isn’t slightly longer or shorter than the other." With the camera aligned, and a computer screen to show the visuals, a series of colored dots is displayed on the patient, allowing the surgeon to utilize pinpoint accuracy as he or she inserts the two main pieces — a ball and socket.
