It looks like the Information Highway actually will pass through the hills and valleys - if not the hollows - of Rappahannock County after all.
Two companies who’ve proposed to build significant portions of the infrastructure needed to bring widespread broadband Internet to the county - and many other parts of Virginia - received a boost from the governors office recently. And, last week, a third company made its own deal for a more immediate boost.
On the local front, Warrentonbased Piedmont Broadband (PBB) signed an agreement last week with a broadband wholesaler to tap into that company’s high-speed fiber-optic pipeline in Culpeper County sometime in the coming month.
PBB’s agreement to buy highspeed service from Georgia-based FiberLight will allow the wireless, point-to-point Internet sendee provider to offer its current 120 or so, subscribers (most of them in Rappahannock County) more consistently higher speeds and reliability, said owner Rich Shoemaker.
“It's like going from a horsedrawn plow to a brand new 100horsepower John Deere,” said Shoemaker, who also operates a landscaping business, in describing the additional capacity the FiberLight connection will provide to the entire PBB network.
