Sperryville, traditionally the county’s most liberal neighborhood, county voters went primarily for the same slate of Republican state candidates who were elected handily on Tuesday: Bob McDonnell for governor, Bill Bolling for lieutenant governor and Ken Cuccinelli for attorney general. McDonnell’s margin in the county was highest, winning 57.7 percent of Rappahannock votes to 42.2 percent for Democrat Creigh Deeds. (Statewide, that margin was 58.6 to 41.2 percent.)
A majority of voters in Rappahannock - though it is the home county of 15th District House of Delegates Democrat candidate John Lesinski - voted for his Republican opponent, incumbent Todd Gilbert. Gilbert’s margin, though slim in Rappahannock ((1,564 to 1,308), was much larger in Page, Shenandoah and Rockingham counties, which comprise the rest of the district.
Overall, Gilbert received 16,167 votes (or 69.3 percent) while Lesinski got 7,155 votes (30.6 percent). Lesinski won his home Hampton voting district by only two votes (285 to 283) and beat Gilbert 330 to 250 in the Piedmont district.
