Steven Nelson entertained a crowd with a wonderful slide show presentation of his 4-H trip to Japan at the 4-H Achievement celebration Oct. 25 at the Washington Baptist Church.
Steven, his mother Kim, and his sister Katie, wore traditional Japanese attire.
Afterward, Jenny Kapsa, 4-H Coordinator, recognized the 4-H leaders from the 2009 4-H year and handed out the year’s 4-H Spirit awards to the award winners.
Two 4-H Spirit awards are given each year - one to a 4-H adult volunteer and one to a 4-H youth who have best represented 4-H in using all of the four “Hs”—head, heart, hands and health - to better themselves and the community around them.
This year’s Spirit award winners were Jim and Debbie Massie, who won the adult 4-H Spirit award, and Khalil Roman, who won the youth 4H Spirit award.
The Massies have been donating their time to 4-H for 20 years and brought their children up in the program. They are leaders of the 4-H Livestock Club. Each year they run the Rappahannock portion of the Culpeper-Madison-Rappahannock (CMR) Livestock Show and Sale at the CMR Farm Show, and they give numerous hours of their time fundraising with their club and performing service to the Rappahannock community.
Khalil Roman has been involved in 4-H as a camper, as a counselor in training, and this past year, as a new 4-H Teen counselor at the 4-H winter camp, 4-H day camp, and 4-H overnight camp. He also participated in a NOVA 4-H Center Teen camping program, as well as the TALT (Teen and Adult Leadership Training) and represented Rappahannock County 4-H at Congress, a program offered at VT each year for senior 4-H members. Khalil is involved in many extra curricular activities, and is a funny, supportive, enthusiastic person who is a wonderful representative of 4-H.
