Supervisors hand off issue

to county tourism group

Faced with a budding controversy over whether a new county visitor center should be at The Link in Sperryville or part of a naturalfoods coop/arts center due to open in the spring several blocks away, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors punted Monday at its monthly meeting.

The ball now is headed to the county’s Tourism Partnership committee for its study and recommendation after the board voted to table the matter at County Administrator John McCarthy's suggestion.

McCarthy said afterward that weeks ago he scheduled the vote for Monday, wherein the board could give its blessing to a visitor center at The Link (thus enabling state assistance, including highway signage).

The request for the designation came from the Rappahannock Non-Profit Center (RNPC), which operates The Link and had made preparations to create a part-time, volunteer-staffed visitor center in the complex’s central foyer, he said.

The Link is a large community center/auditorium with adjacent offices and a small room currently leased to Rappahannock Cellars which offers wine tastings there on weekends. It is located at the former site of the old high school at the intersection of U S. routes 522 and 211 in Sperryville. It is also, depending on one’s arrival in the county and long-term memory, the former Sperryville Emporium, Faith Mountain store or Sunnyside Market coipplex

McCarthy said it was after he scheduled the vote that he became aware of a competing visitor center proposal from Jerome Niessen, who is building the Rappahannock Natural Food Coop
