New Insecticides For
Parasite Control
Two new insecticides — toxaphene and lindane—now are recommended by insect control specialists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture for controlling some of the most serious parasites on livestock.
Toxaphene is recommended for control of ticks, lice, hornflies, and sheep ticks on all livestock except dairy cows.
To control ticks and lice on cattle and swine, use sprays containing 5/10 percent toxaphene. Hornflies are conl-olloH nearly as well with sprays containing toxaphene as those containing DDT. Toxaphene will protect animals from reinfestation by ticks for two to three weeks or longer. Lindane is recommended as a spray for controlling lice on da?ry cows, and for control of lice and ticks on other cattle. Lindane was recommended for the first time last summer as a residual spray against flies in dairy barns and milk plants.
Livestock owners are cautioned to use both of the chemicals carefully.
Nutrition School
Scheduled At VPI
The annual 'nutrition school for feed manufacturers, dealers, and salesmen will be held at VPI February 22-24, Paul M. Reaves, of the dairy department staff, and chairman of the nutrition school committee, announces.
Among the topics to be discussed are new developments in animal nutrition, and the value of certain new feeds on the market.
Speakers scheduled for the three-day session include: Dr. P. R. Record, Security Mills, Knoxville, Tenn.; Dr. C. 1). Caskey, Cooperative Mills, Baltimore. Md.; Dr. J. E. Hunter, Allied Mills, Libertyville, 111.; Dr. John C. Hammond, Newton and Son Company, Bridgeville, Del.; Dr. R. T. Parkhurst, Lindsey-Robinson C’o., Roanoke; Dr. Victor lleiman, Kasco Mills, Waverly, N. Y.; and Professor Holdaway, Dr. Clayton Holmes, George C. Herring, X. R. Thompson, Glen Pursley, and Reaves, of the VPI staff.
Other features of the school will be tours of the college barns and poultry plant, and open forums on “How Can the Newer Findings in Nutrition be Applied _in Making Feed . Form las," and 'on “What Is The Nutritional Value of Certain New Feeds on the Market.”
