Calling for greater economy in government to save the taxpayers* a few dollars, William J. Bird, national affairs advisor. Chamber of Commerce of the United States, in a radio broadcast Tuesday night urged local citizens to make government effiency more popular.
In the fourth of a series of eight radio broadcasts sponsored by the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce in co-operation with the Chamber of Commerce of the ■United Stater, Bird said there were $18 awaiting every American man, woman, and child, if recommendations of the Hoover Commission would be effected.
Calling for support of the Hoover Commission recommendations to save an approximate $4-billion of the American taxpayers* money, Bird said that about 2%-billions of dollars could be saved through the commission recommendations.
“As you know, there have been a lot of complaints in recent years about this big, entangled, octopus-like government of ours.. About the duplication and overlapping that have come about as our government has grown in size and cost, year after year.
“In 194 7, Congress and the President decided 'it was high time for reform. They agreed that unless something could be done in the very near future to rrtaket the goiefnment more efficient and economical,! that government would soon become so enormous that ihe job of streamlining would become impossible,” he said.
