several factors are responsible for poor alfalfa stands, most of which can be eliminated. Most common among these is a loose, cloddy seed bed which does not hold moisture well and allows the seed to be covered too deeply. Lack of proper fertility level and sufficient application of commercial fertilizer results in short lived stands. jl - Sheet and gully erosion account for many poor and weedy stands. ■Gully erosion also leaves the field scarred and hard to work over. Sheet erosion removes the seed, •fertilizer and soil from scattered areas over the field.
