The plowing of the land and seedbed preparation for alfalfa holds first priority on many Culpeper aitd Rappahannock county farms during the month of July. It is extremely important to plow land eirly in order to allow sufficient time for the land to settle and to develop a' fine firm seed bed. On seed beds prepared during short periods by intensive working of the land, much moisture is lost. Whereas land prepared over a period of several weeks has a greater, chance of holding and accumulating more moisture.
Experience has taught farmers in Northern Virginia that alfalfa Should be -seeded as soon after July 25, as possible, provided the seed bed is properly prepared and sufficient subsoil moisture exists. Late seedings sometimes do not survive the winter largely because they have not had sufficient time tfi establish an extensive root system.
