Upswing In Hog Prices
Noted In Recent Weeks
A rapid advance in' price* of market bog* ha* been recorded in the past few weeks, and in early July the Chicago market reached the highest peak since November 30, 1048.
George Herring, animal husbandman for the Extension Ser, wice at V.P.I., said the rise in prices brought about a much more favorable relationship between the price of feed and the price of hogs. The strong demand for pork products coupled with reduced supplies was responsible for the unusual price rise, he say*.
A look ahead shows an expected slight decrease in the fall pig crop. High feed prices in relation to market hog prices in April and May when most sows in Virginia are bred for fall farrow no doubt bad their effect.
The Virginia spring pig crop, on the other hand, showed a 2 per cent increase over 1949.
Nationally, the 1950 spring pig crop totaled 60,079,000 head, an increase of 8 per cent over 1949. The number of sows farrowing was 6 per eent above last year, but less pigs were saved per litter. Reports on breeding intentions in
