To check costly erosion on roodaide embankments, the State Highway Department daring the fiscal year ended June 30 seeded 1,185 acres of right-of-way and planted 1,454 trees, 3,111 shrubs.
Some 123 projects during^^ie year were designed to qSmtrol erosion or to provide mor| adequate roadside drainage, the department reported.
The program was handled by the department’s landscape division, but highway officials said its primary purpose was to reduce maintenance costs and to lengthen the life of Virginia's highways.
Roadside beautification was an “important by-product,” they added.
