When erosion conditions exists, debris is washed into roadside ditches, clogging them and causing water to back up. Frequently the water cuts under the roadway surface and brings about costly damage, engineers explained. Inadequate drainage results in the same condition, they added.

The road agency also reported these landscape activities during the fiscal year:

Special studies of controlling tweeds and brush through chemical application were underway on 81 roadside acies. Engineers said results were "fairly satisfactory.”

Five new highway wayside picnic areas were developed and modern toilet and drinking water facilities were installed in two others; Officials, noted a "constant - increase” in the use of waysides, picnic tables and parking turnouts at historical markers.

At the beginning of the year, the department took over the maintenance and installation of state historical markers, which are prepared and provided by the Department of Conservation and Development. Nearly 500 were made to develop mechanical equipment for roadside operations, Such equipment rwill materially re-r duce operating costs, the department said. Improvements were made in a mulch-fertilizer-seed spray outfit and an ensilage cutter was converted into a machine for blowing straw or hay mulch on roadside slopes.
