The other evening, as I was playing bridge (another escape!) a friend walked in and, with all polite sincerity, asked “Playing bridge?” Of course we were. He or any- trtber half rational -person could have seen as much. He was a college graduate. •
On another occasion, while reclining in an easy chair, interestedly absorbed in the book I was reading, a friend, entered and. pleasantly queried, “Reading?” Well, we’re still friends.
Have you ever had a particularly busy day and, after plodding home too exhausted to speak, been met with, “Have a hard day?" To be sure, this is a conversational quip with which to stab a tired silence, and maybe should not be parried thus: “No thanks, I just had one.” It is probably better -to turn and leave the room while strength yet remains. With a little thought, many other trite remarks may be recalled which are resorted to, just to make conversation. Well, why make conversation? Why not turn the tables and let conversation make us?
