Mayor Davis Speaks —

At Chicago Convention

Mayor Dorothy C. Davis of Washington was a speaker Wednesday, July 23, at the National Demorratir Convention when she took part on a ladies’ program in the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hilton hotel.

Mrs. Davis appeared on the Mary Margaret McBryde television show Monday, July 21, and her speech was tape-recorded for re-broadcast on Thursday, July 24. Giving a narrative of how the ladies of Washington were elected and re-elected, Mrs. Davis expressed the belief that “we should first-he^-. women and perform our duties as such, and then accept public responsibilities as we have done. Assuming the old-fashioned notion that a woman’s place is in the home is true, then my contention is that a woman’s home extends beyond her front gate.” The mayor explained that the election was not “a battle of the sexes," but women in public office gave the opportunity of women “to help ease the acute and dangerous tensions of American life.” She' felt that, “men and women must proceed co-operatively on a course of conduct that will better our citizens to meet the changing, conditions in the world today.’’
