> The productivity of any soil is determined by two major factors, its physical and chemical characteristics. Present chemical characteristics are determined by age of the soil, or stage of development, and parent^ material from which it was derived. Soil type is based primarily on physical characteristics, which cannot be, determined merely by looking at the surface, nor even the plough depth. Soil might be very fertile, yet have physical qualities to‘ make it unproductive.
