Soils are determined by types, slope and degree of erosion. When soil is mapped, you put all possible knowledge you can secure on the map. The geographic picture by airplane, the color, physical differences etc. Many of these facts can only be secured by digging in the soil as deep as necessary to secure the desired information, through as many fields of knowledge as possible. At this time the farmer’s practical experience is most valuable.
It would take around a year to map Rappahannock County, at around $30,000.00. Everyone would be given a map of his land, and the various agriculture committeemen and agents would explain it to him or her. Rappahannock does not have to assume any part of the cost. Some individuals in the county already have their maps It is the consensus of the opinion of the committee that Rappahannock would be greatly benefited by their project, as has other counties, that have proven its value by experience. Maps have shown that most of the good land in the counties mapped was found to be in woods. Persons who wish to purchase land these days usually want to know the soil as he would an Angus Bull. In Norfolk County the map showed that the best land in the county was to be sold to the navy, because it was thought to be the poorest.
It was also stated that because of the fact that the map in Culpeper County was not used that a certain school building was built on a type of soil not suitable for building lot. Consequently when the soil expans as the result of moisture, the basement is damaged. The citizens of Rappahnnock, who were present at this important meeting desire the expression of other citizens in the county and would gladly pass on to anyone the valuable information received through their study and discussions on the subject.
U. S. Recruiting News
The Culpeper Army and Air Force recruiting station sends us word that from now on a recruiting sergeant will be at the Washington Post Office regularly every Friday from about 10 ^L.m. to 12 noon. Those interested in an enlistment may contact him there during that time. The recruiting office also states that it has openings for piror service men in the Quartermaster Corps, Medical Corps, Transportation Corps and Ordnance Corps. It also has vacancies for specially qualified original applicants in the Signal Corps. These assignments are in addition to the openings for regular volunteers, including women, in both the Army and the Air Force.
