“A good fly spray to control horn flies, house flies, lice, biting gnats, mosquitoes and stable flies on beef cattle is made with a spray powder containing 49% DDT with %% lindane,” Beaver says. “The DDT gives long residual life to the mixture and the lindane gives quickkilling effect on the DDT-immune house flies. There is not, however, sufficient lindane in this formula to control mange mites.”
Normally, a mixture of 8 pounds of the spray powder, Beaver explained, with 96 gallons of water can be applied at the rate of a half-gallon per adult animal. On the average, the cost of using a fly spray of this quality is about 3c per animal, per application.
