good commercial stock spray," he continued, “while more expensive to use, will rid beef cattle of horn flies, lice, biting gnats, mosquitoes and stable flies as well as ticks and sarcoptic mites. The stock spray should contain 45% DDT plus 2&% lindane, the powerful insecticide especially effective against mange mites and DDT-resistant house flies. This solution is a fast-acting agent.

“This stock spray should be used 10 pounds of the powder to 100 gallons of water for horn flies, lice and ticks. Apply from a half to a gallon ' per adult animal to control flies and ticks, and from a gallon to one and one-half gallons for lice. Using a spray this powerful will cost approximately 11 to 12c per gallon. For stable flies, house flies and mange; y mites, use 20 pounds of the powder to 100 gallons of water.

“Unless the cattleman is certain there is a mange mite or tick infestation, the fly spray will be sufficient, providing of course, he sprays at regular and frequent intervals.”

On a cost-per-head basis, Beaver pointed out, the cattleman can spray 4 times with the fly solution for the cost of a single application of the more powerful and quick-acting stock spray.

Beef cattlemen are urged by agricultural chemists to set up a program for fall spraying—just before the first cold snap. This fall application will tend to keep the lice under control during the winter.

An adequate, planned spraying program, Beaver concluded, is essential to fast, efficient gains and for profitable milk production. Research authorities agree the program should be put into operation in the spring when the first signs of infestation are evident and be continued at regular and frequent intervals until the cold weather prevents further application.
