A few common-sense feeding practices will help relieve the dairyman’s troubles in drouth-stricken areas of Virginia.
The current need in Virginia is for more milk producion, and immediate steps should be taken to correct dairy production hazards which result from short winter feed supplies. Employment among Virginia consumers is at a high level, and thereTs no indication that either the demand for or the price of milk will fall this year.
Dairymen who are victims of the drouth have several alternatives in meeting the emergency:
First, they may cull out any low producing or undersirable cows and feed the remaining higher producing cows better to maintain a higher level of milk production
Second, under existing feed and milk price relationships and the prospects for 'a continuous demand for milk, dairymen may be justified -in buying hay and gram on an emergency basis until new crops are produced. It probably will pay to keep the high producing cows in top production, even though it may be necessary to feed them bought hay.
