August 4 is more than just the date that George Washington laid out a little town in the Blue Ridge mountains which Is today the county seat of Rappahannock.
In 1749, the young_ Surveyor who was later to become Father of His Country, did not realize that the date Augusts had already been marked in American history, for on that day 14 years before, August 4, 1785, a little printer, John Peter Zenger, came to trial in a crammed New York court, and wrote* a page in America's freedom. >
The court trial of a poor immigrant printer 217 years ago had much to do with the kind of rfewspapers you read today. He had* been charged with libel for writing that Now York’s high-tempered Colonial Governor, William Cosby, endangered liberty by tampering with the people’s right to a jury • trial.
What happened in that court before nightfall crystallized Colonial opinion, altered the nation’s Constitution and influenced court decisions—past and present.
Unexpectedly, a prominent 80year-old Philadelphia lawyer named Andrfw Hamilton showed up just before the trial to defend Zenger. .7
