the tip from Miss Ruth Jamison, house furnishings specialist at VPI, who has several tips on how to use accessories wisely.
For instance, she says a fireplace in a room is the center of interest. Your most important picture, clock, pitcher, pewter plates, etc., belong here. Arrange articles ’on the mantel so they are wellbalanced. For formal balance place a group of objects on each side an equal distance from the center. Informal balance is perhaps more interesting than formal balance. Follow the principle that you would in using weights on a scale. Heavier objects can be placed nearer the center to balance smaller objects near the end.
When you hang a picture over a mantel, keep proportion in mind. Don’t use a picture that is too small for the space, hung so high that it is not a part of the mantel grouping. Choose a larger picture IT
