Of this total 617,164 millilters were distributed to the health departments of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to be administered without charge by public health agencies. Another 37,-810 milliliters were used by national Red Cross blood laboratories in research or sent to other laboratories for this purpose. Some of the remainder was sent direct from Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D. C., to doctors on request for patients with continuing needs for gamma globulin because of blood deficiencies or used by those physicians for research. The rest was requisitioned by the 55 regional blood centers of the Red Cross to fill special requests within those regions.
