The Children’s Home Society of Virginia placed 148 babies in adoptive homes last ydar, the largest number it has ever placed in a year, J. W. Stuart Gilchrist, general secretary, said in the society’s annual report just issued. A total of 434 babies were in the care of the society in 1961. Of these one was from Rapipahannock County and one other baby was in the adoptive home of Rappahannock County people. Contributions from the people of Rappahannock County in the campaign last year helped the society to assist these babies.
Gilchrist pointed out that the society is now able to place most of its babies in home within six months after the adoptive parents have filed their application. In previous years it has usually taken longer.
He reported also /"that the society is placing babies in adoptive homes at earlier ages—and this makes it possible to care for 'Sore babies.
The large number of babies in need of homes results in the need for constinuing growth and expansion of the society to care for them, Gilchrist said, and the society also will need more adoptive families.
He reported that the society received in to care 154 babies last year, as compared with 151 the previous year, and that it placed seven more in adoptive homes than
80.6%
